Devi's Falls: Unveiling the Mystery Behind its many Names

Posted on 2024-06-25

Category General

Devi’s Falls, often called Davis Falls, David’s Falls, or even the Devil’s Falls is a cascade equally puzzling and mysterious as its name. Residing in the heart of Pokhara, it creates a spectacle when the water crashes down and explodes into a gust of misty wind. It's also called ‘Patale Chhango’ based on the lores around this waterfall which claim that the water ends up in the Netherworld, called ‘Patal Lok’ in Hindu mythology. The mist creates an illusion of smoke rising from the depths of hell, eerily justifying its local name and legends.

The most widely accepted story behind the name Devi's Falls involves a tragedy in 1961. While enjoying the waterfall with her husband, a Swiss national Mrs. Davis got swept away by the sudden strong currents caused by the opening of the Fewa Dam. Her body was tragically recovered 3 days later in the Phusre Khola downstream. Her grieving father later visited the fall and was impressed by the beauty of it. He decided to contribute to the development of its surroundings and this is how the waterfall got its name ‘Davis Falls’.

Some Pokhara locals hold onto a different tale of a lover named David who took his own life by jumping into the waterfall. People believe he did so to immortalize his forbidden love and succeeded as it is also called ‘David’s Falls’. Even though the evidence is missing, this alternate story adds another layer of intrigue to the place.  Another similar story describes a Nepali woman named Devi who jumped into the fall in a similar fashion and circumstances as David. Could Devi's story be the true origin of the name or just an echo of the foreign tale?

Devi's Falls is a nature’s spectacle as much as a mystery. Fed by Fewa Lake, it disappears into a hidden passage before reappearing downstream in the Phusre Khola. The pouring water creates a strong breeze, setting the lush green leaves around it in a mesmerizing dance. The best time to visit Devi’s Falls is the monsoon season, between June and August, when the ever-so-strong water currents take the spectacle to breathtaking heights.

Pokhara has to offer many captivating natural treasures steeped in their beauty, mystery, and history. Devi's Falls is just the beginning of your Pokhara adventure! Discover Pokhara, a backdrop of the majestic Himalayan peaks with a rich culture, vibrant streets, and endless adventure possibilities.
