Celebrating the Constitution Day of Nepal

Constitution Day of Nepal is an important event in the history of Nepal which is celebrated every year on 3rd Asoj. After more than 6 decades of political struggle, on 20 September 2015 (BS 2072 Asoj 3rd), the Constitution of Nepal was implemented by and through the elected representatives of the people. Nepal is a federal democratic republic and is a proudly independent and sovereign nation.

Significance of Constitution Day

The Constitution is the fundamental law of Nepal that outlines the framework for governance, and defines the rights and responsibilities of citizens, and every person must comply with it. It aims to define and ensure the rights and freedoms of the Nepali people.

 

Some features of Nepal’s constitution are:

  1. Nepal as an independent, indivisible, sovereign, secular, inclusive, democratic, socialism-oriented, federal democratic republican state.
  2. All citizens of Nepal have the right to obtain citizenship certificates. They can get the citizenship certificate with their gender identity by the name of their mother or father.
  3. Equal rights given to daughters in the patrimonial property like sons. 
  4. The main structure of Nepal is of three levels: Federation, State, and Local.
  5. Provision of an independent, competent, and unitary nature of the judiciary in Nepal.

 

Celebrations and Events

Constitution Day was celebrated with events held across Nepal, the main event being the ‘National Day Concert’ held at Durbarmarg in Kathmandu. The event saw various artists and their musical performances as the lively audience waved national flags throughout the event.

 

Highlights of the event:

  1. Orchestra by Nepal Police, Nepal Army, and Armed Police Force musical bands.
  2. More than 30 artists like Kutumba Band, Kunti Moktan, Sugam Pokharel, Pramod Kharel, Swapna Suman, etc performed as representatives of all the seven provinces. 
  3. Presence of multiple political and influential figures.

 

Constitution Day, representing a significant step towards democracy, equality, and justice, is an important day for Nepal as country-wide celebrations highlight its importance.
